about

This one goes *way* back -- to a time before the younger Rancher's birth, and even before the original incarnation of R4P in the early 80's. But the viewpoint, alas, seems fresh as a daisy -- b-cuz, as we often say, "Human nature is just too much for most people."

lyrics

HICK TOWN

Handsome are the works of man
Glory is his middle name
Wondrous are the ways he gets it done

Countless are the stones he’s laid
From the pyramids to the Empire State
Endless are his deeds under the sun

But each time he lays a brick down
He'll make another hick town—how come

He’ll fool you with his works of art
Take your pocket watch apart
And praise the marvels of our century

He’ll name wise men and Presidents
But ask the color of his fence
He’ll only know the side that he can see

And once you get this trick down
Check if you’re in a hick town—you’ll be

Because mankind shares but one belief
To him the world’s a thing with teeth
To him the world’s a pair of tiger’s eyes
And it wants to gnaw upon his bones
And stares at him when he’s alone
The way the snake stared out from Paradise

So he’ll not lay his pick down
‘Til he has made his hick town King-size

And now he’s colonized the globe
Forced Mother Nature to disrobe
And from her juice produced a fireball

And with his cheerleaders and Army boys
He makes a patriotic noise
So loud that he can’t hear his conscience call

But if the clock should tick down
He’s only lost a hick town—and that’s all

That’s all, that’s all, that’s all, that’s all
